Percussion - Andrea Centazzo
Soprano Saxophone - Lol Coxhill (tracks: 1 to 5)
Trumpet - Franz Koglmann
Recorded live in concert in Vienna, Austria, 1981/1983.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The collaboration between Andrea Centazzo (percussion) and Lol Coxhill (soprano sax) lasted few years and saw mainly the two playing in duo or with the trumpeter Franz Koglmann. Centazzo was also performing few duo concerts with Koglmann and this CD presents tracks with both combinations. All materials were recorded live in Vienna in 1981 & 1983. Elderly statesman British soprano sax master, Lol Coxhill, is certainly one of the most diverse and distinctive saxists to emerge from the UK for the past fifty+ years. The great German trumpeter & composer, Franz Koglmann, has also worked with a diverse cast of players like Paul Bley, Bill Dixon, James Emery, Lee Konitz & Tony Coe, as well as leading a number of his own units on the Hat Art & Between the Lines labels. The trio part of this disc sounds fabulous production-wise and was recorded in 1981. Both Lol and Franz have unique tones on their respective horns and sound superb playing around and with each other as Andrea is the perfect foil playing assorted percussion weaving punctuation, textures and rhythm amongst the two horns. Both horns are bathed slightly with natural reverb from the hall they are playing in and both horns work in similar tonal areas so that they always sound sympathetic when playing together. The trio truly hit their stride on "Darkly #3", when they erupt tightly together and about midway. The duo with Koglmann and Centazzo is also pretty amazing. Centazzo is a master of diverse percussion sounds and approaches. He often sets the scene with evocative sounds using just his cymbals and other pieces of metal. Centazzo sounds as if he is bowing his cymbal and using chains and other small objects to coax a variety of haunting sounds. Koglmann often sounds like a current version of Bill Dixon by concentrating on a few notes at a time and dealing with slurs, slightly bent notes and selecting each note or sound one at a time. Andrea's approach often sounds ritualistic like the way church bells chime at a certain time of day. This is a fine and focused duo that always sounds marvelous together, taking their time to weave a variety of moods, textures and rhythms. --BLG, Downtown Music Gallery
