Formed in 1982 and signed to their first big record deal in 1984, Lloyd Cole & The Commotions were one of the most successful "indie" acts in the UK, and oft-quoted as influences to many other subsequently famous bands. Their knowingly pretentious lyrics and namedropping in songs endeared them to a generation of students - and for some time had the band vying with The Smiths in terms of popularity. Recorded in 1986 at The Marquee London, and interspersed with pastiche band shots, this excellent live concert was produced and directed by Mike Mansfield.
The British-based indie rock act Lloyd Cole and the Commotions formed in 1982 and signed with Capitol Records in 1984. They explicitly characterized themselves via such elements as "pretentious" lyrics, constant name-dropping in mid-song, and a style that influenced many later and more successful acts. For a time, they even competed with the better-known (though not less influential) Smiths in terms of popularity. Cole and the Commotions headline this live set, performed and filmed in 1986 at London's Marquee venue. Mike Mansfield produced and directed; selections include "Patience," "Speedboat," "Glory," and many more. ---Nathan Southern, All Movie Guide |
