The piano trio, i.e. the combination of piano, bass and drums, is one of the classic band formats of modern jazz. Bassist Charlie Haden and drummer Paul Motian have made history as members of the foremost piano trios of the lae 50's to early 70's . Motian was Bill Evans' associate from 1959 -1964 and played in Keith Jarrett's trio from 1968-1971 - together with Charlie Haden.
On In the Year of the Dragon, Haden and Motian team up with a young pianist who in the last few years has earned the repuation as one of the most versatile, prolific and distinctive keyboard stylists of today: Geri Allen.
On JMT, Geri Allen was so sfar to be heard primarily in conjunction with her adventurous M-Base peers (see Greg Osby, Mindgames; Steve Coleman and Five Elements; World Expansion; and On the Edge of Tomorrow; plus Steve Coleman Group; Motherland Pulse). In the trio setting, she presents herself in a different light, proves to be clearly conscious of piano history.
In the Year of the Dragon leaves no doubt about Geri Allen's models: Thelonious Monk's rhythmic and harmonic boldness, lyrical Bill Evans' harmonical wizardry, Bud Powell's vitality - Geri Allen has absorbed them all, as well as more recent developments in piano stylistics. Yet it is immediately obvious that a distinct and singular musical personality is at work here.
Piano trio - this term not only connotes a particular line - up but also a specific concept, i.e. the equal integration of all musicians into the group. Paul Motian's comment about the Bill Evans Trio: "We were basically three soloists playing music together." For the trio Geri Allen/Charlie Haden/Paul Motian - musicians who have closely worked together for years, e.g. in Haden's liberation Music Orchestra - this holds especially true.
The selection of materials on In the Year of the Dragon is in part an outgrowth of the trio's democratic concept. Each of the musicians has contributed two compositions of her/his own. Additionally, they have included "Rollano," a composition by flute player Juan Lazaro Mendolas who joins the trio for this title. With an unusual arrangement of Ornette Coleman's "Invisible" (which lays bare a close relation to bebop) and a swift version of Bud Powell's "Oblivion ," originally performed by piano solo, they pay homage to two of the most important figures in jazz history. Allen/Haden/Motian's In the Year of the Dragon saves the art of the piano trio from oblivion and advances it to new musical heights.
