Chris Andrews is best known for the six singles he cut for EMI s Parlophone label between 1967 and 1970 under the name of Tim Andrews. (a name change to avoid confusion with the other singer/songwriter Chris Andrews who was already well established on the music scene). His superb solo recordings collected here for the first time represent only part of an eclectic music career that could have only happened in the sixties. Prior to signing to EMI as a solo artist in 1967, Andrews had played the Artful Dodger in both the London and New York casts of Lionel Bart s Oliver, before returning to London in 1965 and doing stints in such seminal mod and freakbeat bands as The Gremlins and Fleur De Lys, as both a singer and guitarist. During his time with Fleur De Lys, Andrews also provided the lead vocal on the highly rated Summer of Love single Reflections of Charles Brown, which was issued under the name Rupert s People. The extraordinary cuts where accompanied by Paul Korda (later of acid folk album Passing Stranger fame) come on like a Bee Gees / Franki Valli mash up. |
