This album is a tribute to the Mexican-born composer of love songs and ballads, Armando Manzanero, hence the title Eternally Manzanero. The lead musicians are trumpeter Arturo Sandoval, Cuban in his origins but a citizen of the United States since 1998, and Jorge Calandrelli, from Argentina, who plays piano on this disc but who also co-produced it and arranged all the songs. The composer is a guest vocalist on three tracks, combining well with Sandoval who displays his own vocal ability throughout the album, as well as his undoubted facility on trumpet and flugelhorn. Drums, bongos, percussion and strings complete the line-up.
The finished article is situated very much on the Latin jazz/easy listening frontier with romantic melodies, a gentle but insistent beat, strings and clear enunciation from Sandoval who has a fine voice, ideally suited to this kind of material. He was, of course, encouraged by Dizzy Gillespie in his early days as a trumpet player and was known for more fiery qualities from those on display here. His purity of tone and empathetic style on this CD more than anyone put me in mind of Chris Botti. Sandoval and Manzanero complement each other's voices on Nada Personal, Contigo Aprendi and Como Yo Te Ame, possessing as they do subtly different vocal timbres. Esta Tarde Vi Llover is notable for its bossa nova rhythm while Llevantela, Mia and Somos Novios are all boleros. Several tracks are tinged with sadness, regret or nostalgia for former days, for example, Te Extrano and No.
Here is a disc which will surely appeal to those who enjoy impeccably presented and performed late-night or dinner jazz with a Latin flavour.
