Fumble were an English rock and roll revival group, that formed in 1967 and disbanded in 1982. They had specialised in covering rock and roll classics. Although they were never particularly successful, the band did achieve some recognition appearing at some festivals and on the television programme, Oh Boy!.
Fumble were by far the classiest of the rock’n’roll revival bands operating during the Seventies, recording extensively in their own right as well as touring with Bill Haley and Fats Domino, backing Chuck Berry and appearing in both the London show Elvis: The Musical and Jack Good’s revival of the legendary Oh Boy!
None of their rivals had original material of the calibre of “Free The Kids” or “Marilyn”, and none of their fellow retro-rockers possessed the imagination or artistic selfconfidence to come up with such radical revamps of classic R&B/rock tunes as their incendiary version of ‘Not Fade Away’.
David Bowie used them as a support act on two separate tours in 1972-73 (and would later add Fumble’s pianist, Sean Mayes, to his own band), John Peel was an admirer, and the band had plenty of supporters in the British music press as well.
A 4-CD package in a handsome clamshell box, Not Fade Away: The Complete Recordings 1964-1982 does exactly what it says on the tin. It features all of the band’s recordings, including their three studio albums, beginning with their self-titled 1972 debut set (housed in a memorable Hipgnosis sleeve) and the superb follow-up ‘Poetry In Lotion’, which featured a handful of superior original songs alongside the vintage covers.
In addition, we include the ‘Rumble With Fumble’ live LP as well as a number of previously unreleased studio outtakes, alternative versions, a BBC radio session and even eight pre-Fumble recordings from their time as mid-Sixties garage beat/R&B group The Iveys.
Containing over five hours of music across four CDs, Not Fade Away features a lavish 40-page booklet with a new 5000 word essay on the band’s fascinating career, numerous quotes from frontman Des Henly and a huge number of extremely rare photos. It’s the definitive career anthology of a criminally underrated band.
