The Diary is the debut studio album by the Dutch band The Gentle Storm, consisting of composer and guitarist Arjen Anthony Lucassen and singer and lyricist Anneke van Giersbergen. It was released on March 23, 2015 in Europe,[1] and the following day in the US.
A concept album about a love story set in the 17th century, The Diary consists of two discs, each with the same track list: the "Gentle" side of the album consists of acoustic, softer, folk-oriented versions of the songs, while the "Storm" side of the album is made of heavy metal versions of the songs with progressive and symphonic elements.
The Gentle Storm is a musical project by Arjen Lucassen, who is also
known as Ayreon, and Anneke van Giersbergen. Their debut studio
album The Diary was released in 2015 and is described by Lucassen as
“an epic double concept album, a combination of ‘classical meets metal’
and ‘acoustic folk’.” The storyline follows a Dutch sailor that embarks on
a two-year voyage, leaving his wife at home in Holland. The only way
for the couple to communicate and keep their love alive during the long
separation is through letters. These letters form the basis for the songs
on the album.
The 3LP-set The Diary is available as a limited edition of 1000
individually numbered copies on flaming coloured vinyl and includes
a 12-page booklet with lyrics, the background story and fictional diary
entires from Susanne and Joseph.
