This album goes with the other one from the live Vanguard Village recording in 1961, Sunday at the Vanguard Village, which is excellent as well. Both feature the same trio, Evans on piano, Scott LaFaro's on bass and Paul Motian on drums. Scott LaFaro is a revelation on bass, he died shortly after the concert and Paul Motian is a perfect fit. Bill Evans is amazing. This all happened in an intimate setting on Seventh Avenue South in Greenwich Village, New York City, the Vanguard Village, a club which saw many jazz artists perform there, all the greats. The club was opened on February 22, 1935, by Max Gordon, featuring many forms of music at first, such as folk music and beat poetry, but it switched to an all-jazz format in 1957. I bet if those walls could talk we would listen all day long.
