McKinley Morganfield grew up with his grandmother in a Mississippi plantation. Because he was always playing in the nearby river, she's the one who got him his famous nickname. At the age of seven, Muddy started practising harmonica, but switched for a guitar ten years later and started playing local events. In 1941 and 1942, he recorded for Alan Lomax, then moved to Chicago. In 1948, he signed with Chess and became famous in the early 1950s. By the end of the decade, he got to travel to the UK where he overwhelmed the English crowd with his electric blues and had a major influence on musicians like The Rolling Stones and John Mayall. Truly a blues legend, he died in 1983 at the age of 70 while in his sleep, suffering a fatal heart attack.
