2014 EU reissue on 180g VINYL= this 1974 album marked a transitional point between their original countryrock soundand the slick poprock they would later embrace, including the smash hit Already Gone and their cover version of the Tom Waits ballad Ol 55 effectively, representing the eclectic but expertly blended mix of styles that pushed the Eagles to the top of the 70s rockheap- presented in originally artwork sleeve.
A1 Already Gone A2 You Never Cry Like A Lover A3 Midnight Flyer A4 My Man Mon Homme A5 On The Border
B1 James Dean B2 Ol 55 B3 Is It True Is It True B4 Good Day In Hell B5 Best Of My Love
On their third album the Eagles finally produced a No 1 hit with The Best of My Love but most of On the Border is marked by tough rockers not sweet ballads Already Gone is a brusque kissoff and Midnight Flyer a bluegrass kicker while James Dean recalls the 50s rebel icon and the title track reflects on paranoia and creeping Big Brotherism The Eagles also cover a Tom Waits tune Ol 55 and pay tribute to altcountry godfather Gram Parsons on My Man The album title is prophetic in the sense that the band that made this record bolstered by the addition of guitarist Don Felder was on the verge of greatness but not quite there yet Daniel Durchholz |
