Born Peter Chatman in Memphis in 1915, Memphis Slim, who was inducted into the Blues Hall Of Fame, is considered one of the most influential figures in the history of the blues. He is known for his masterful blend of traditional and jump blues. Slim's virtuoso piano playing and soulful vocals have helped shape the genre. He was a celebrated collaborator and worked with legends such as Big Bill Broonzy and Sonny Boy Williamson. He is also known for appearing on Willie Dixon's groundbreaking debut album Willie's Blues. Slim is the author of the infamous song “Nobody Loves Me”, which became the blues standard “Everyday I Have the Blues”.
Memphis Slim, U.S.A. is a vivid, soulful odyssey and a milestone in blues storytelling. Recorded during an impromptu continuation of an earlier session, this album captures the essence of Memphis Slim's artistry and his life as a traveling blues musician. Released in 1961, the album remains a lost classic, vividly depicting the hardships and triumphs of a blues musician on the road.
Produced by Nat Hentoff, the legendary A&R man from Candid Records, the sessions showcase Slim's rich, commanding voice and his raw and loud piano style. A style that Stanley Dance describes as “hard strength” that “bends at the right moment”. The album features raw, heartfelt performances from Slim along with jazz and blues veterans Arbee Stidham and Jazz Gillum, creating a vivid narrative of the blues experience.
