MINGUS MOVES marked the 1974 return of Charles Mingus to the Atlantic label, where some of his stellar work in the late '50s and early '60s was produced. This was also the final phase of his career (he died in '79 from ALS, or "Lou Gehrig's Disease"). The set features the last of his great small bands, with pianist Don Pullen and saxophonist George Adams (who co-led a fine quartet through the '80s), longtime drummer Dannie Richmond and trombonist Ronald Hampton. Mingus' playfully propulsive "Opus 3" has all the hallmarks of his compositional verve and shows him to be of undiminished power in these often overlooked years of his career. Pullen's always welcome "Big Alice" is one of two cuts added to the CD reissue. |
