A Life with Beethoven
Ludwig van Beethoven has played a major role in the professional development of the violin virtuosa Anne-Sophie Mutter. She devoted 1998 to Beethoven, undertaking an enthusiastically-received worldwide recital tour playing the complete cycle of the composer's violin sonatas, as well as recording them for audio and audio-visual release. Lambert Orkis was her pianist for this marathon venture. On the documentary film included in the present DVD Video, Anne-Sophie Mutter talks about her development as a musician: playing the piano aged five, meeting Herbert von Karajan, with whom she performed a large repertoire of classical violin music. She expresses her passion for Beethoven, which started early in her career when Karajan asked her to study the Violin Concerto. Anne-Sophie Mutter and Lambert Orkis discuss the development of Beethoven's violin sonatas, focusing on Sonatas no. 4 in A minor, op. 23, no. 5 in F major, op. 24, "Spring", no. 7 in C minor, op. 30 no. 2, no. 9 in A major, op. 47, "Kreutzer", and the final Sonata no. 10 in G major, op. 96, which is heard in performance. Lambert Orkis explains their preparation for the arduous performances and their differences of opinion on the interpretation of Sonata no. 4. In the historic Beethoven-Haus in Bonn, Anne-Sophie talks about the famous violinists of the composer's time, and the importance of being able to work from Beethoven's own scores. At the Museum Tinguely in Basle, she reveals the inspiration she finds in contemporary art. There are also contributions from the renowned violin maker Etienne Vatelot and the conductor Paul Sacher.
