Having attended Chetham's and the Guildhall schools of music, followed by regular classes with Alfred Brendel, Paul Lewis achieved considerable success before being chosen by Steinway and Sons as the "1000th registered Steinway artist" in 1997. From 2000 to 2002, he was professor of piano at the Royal Academy of Music in London and was chosen as one of the Wigmore Hall's "Rising Star" artists. Paul Lewis has played with the principal British orchestras, with the Vienna Kammerphilharmonie and the Chamber Orchestra of Cologne. He has also given recitals during some of the major music festivals, notably at the Schubertiade in Schwarzenberg, the Lucerne Piano Festival, the Ruhr Festival and the Chamber Music Festival in Vancouver. He has also given recitals at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, the Purcell Rooms, at Edinburgh's Queen's Hall, at the Turner Sims Concert Hall and other venues. Paul Lewis maintains a special relationship with the Wigmore Hall. An acclaimed chamber musician, he has performed with Yo-Yo Ma, Michael Collins, Ernst Kovacic, the Sine Nomine Quartet, the Leopold String Trio and the Haffner Wind Ensemble, with Katherine Gowers and Adrian Brendel. In 2003, he was nominated for the prestigious Royal Philharmonic Society prize, in the "Instrumentalist of the Year" category. His first recording, of Schubert's D784 and D958 Sonatas released in 2001, was enthusiastically acclaimed by both the public and the critics (Diapason d'Or). In September 2002 Paul Lewis recorded a second Schubert CD. |
