The first album from European guitarist Terje Rypdal -- quite different than most of his other work! The set's got Terje playing that wonderful guitar of his -- edgey and chromatic, but not nearly as spare and moody as on later ECM sides -- and often set against larger orchestrations that have a pretty groovy feel, and which hit some soaring modal big band grooves that are very much in our favorite MPS mode! Terje also sings a bit on the set -- slightly bluesy and kind of cool -- but the real strength of the album is his guitar work, which stands out as incredibly distinct, even at this stage in his career. Other players on the set include Jan Garbarek and tenorist Knut Riisnaes, who orchestrates some of the best tracks. Titles include "A Feeling Of Harmony", "Bleak House", "Winter Serenade", "Dead Man's Tale", and "Wes".
