Imagination, rigor, intelligence, humor -- these are a few of the salient characteristics we've come to expect from Martial Solal and Dave Douglas, in their separate and distinctive careers.
Solal, the wry genius of modern jazz piano, and Douglas, the protean trumpeter and composer, hail from different continents and generations, and their intersection was far from inevitable. But as this album proves, great artists have a way of finding common ground -- and spurring each other to greater heights. (Nate Chinen)
