Recorded: February 26, 1946, 400 Club Restaurant, New York, New York
Trumpeter Louis Prima is today best remembered for the New Orleans-style band he led in the 1930s and his Las Vegas show of the mid-'50s with Keely Smith and Sam Butera. In between, he led a fairly successful big band for a decade, one that was swing-oriented and featured his Dixieland-ish trumpet, enthusiastic vocals, and Italian comedy. This CD has a radio broadcast from the 400 Club Restaurant in New York City. Unfortunately, the personnel is unidentified (other than singers Lily Ann Carol and Jack Powers) and, since this is an inexpensive budget release, the total playing time is under half an hour. Still, if it is found at a cheap price, this CD will be enjoyed by fans of Louis Prima and swing. Highlights include "Gotta See Baby Tonight," "The Brooklyn Boogie," and "Fair and Warmer." ---Scott Yanow, allmusic
