"The Honeydripper" was a hit for its composer, combo leader Joe Liggins, in the early Forties. Its revival by McDuff is in keeping with his blues oeuvre. Blues and the blues feeling run all through this set, which could be subtitled "Brother Jack McDuff Meets the St. Louisans". Tenor saxophonist Jimmy Forrest and guitarist Grant Green both were originally from the Mound City. Forrest had already built a considerable reputation by the time of this recording, but it was Green's introduction to the national audience. Among all the good blues is a subtle, swinging version of Henry Mancini's "Mr. Lucky". |
