Despite the sometimes syrupy background vocals (courtesy of arranger Shorty Rogers), CHRISTMAS ALBUM is a fairly straightforward Herb Alpert outing, with plenty of uptempo numbers given the Brass's good ole Mexican cantina treatment. The rub here, naturally, is that the set is full of yuletide tunes, so "Winter Wonderland," "Sleigh Ride," and even "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring" come across as swinging and sunny. With the exception of "La Mananitas," the album is comprised of traditional Christmas favorites.

The combination of holiday favorites and Alpert's cheery south-of-the-border vibe works surprisingly well--which is why the album hit #1 on the Billboard chart in 1968, '69, and '70, and continues to please today. The 2005 reissue features a lengthy booklet full of notes and photographs and crisply remastered sound.

Herb Alpert turned to jazz's Shorty Rogers -- then toiling in the L.A. film and TV studios -- for voice and string arrangements on his Christmas album, and Rogers in turn went all out for schmaltz. Rogers' cooing voices introduce several of the tunes, whereupon the Tijuana Brass do their mostly unrelated Ameriachi thing familiar from past albums. Indeed, "Las Mananitas" seems to have been lifted from an obscure B-side of a 45 and overdubbed with the Rogers treatment. Jingling bells is a recurring song theme -- first with "Jingle Bells," then the cloying "The Bell That Couldn't Jingle," and ultimately "Jingle Bell Rock." For the first time in a long time, Alpert's sense of pacing occasionally goes awry; "My Favorite Things" nearly comes apart in the silences and piano/vocal interlude between the TJB grooves, and "Sleigh Ride" screeches to a dead halt. And yet time and further exposure has revealed this record's homey charms, which no doubt is one reason why it continues to be available on CD where other TJB best-sellers have fallen by the wayside.
---Richard S. Ginell, allmusic

One of the most loved holiday albums of all time, Christmas Album hit the #1 spot on the Billboard Albums chart three years in a row, 1968-70. And the album's combination of holiday standards and the TJB's special brand of south-of-the-border cheer is as much fun today as it was 35 years ago.
