Jazz / Big Band; Piano Blues; Swing
There are no less than a dozen compilations by Count Basie with this same title, and while they all share some tracks, there are all very different. What distinguishes this one on Synergy is simply its excellent sound,. Each cut has been remastered to maximum effect. The material on this set comes from the 1930s during the band's tenure with Jimmy Rushing as vocalist. This is in no way an essential collection, however, for those seeking to discover the hard-swinging, Kansas City magic of the Count and his bands without spending a ton, this one may be a way in. Along with the title track are classics like "Roseland Shuffle," "Honeysuckle Rose," "Blues in the Dark," and "Jumpin' at the Woodside." ---Thom Jurek, allmusic |
