Jazz / Soul-Jazz
Ray Bryant (piano); Buddy Tate (tenor saxophone); Harry Edison (trumpet); Urbie Green (trombone); Tommy Bryant (bass); Bill English (drums); Eddie Morrison
This pairing of Columbia albums (originally released in 1960 and 1962) features Bryant's combo performing the popular dance piece "The Madison Time" (which was rediscovered by a whole new audience when used in the 1988 John Waters' film "Hairspray") and Bryant's interpretation of move songs - including "Tonight" from "West Side Story."
Two of Ray Bryant's most popular albums, Madison Time and Hollywood Jazz Beat, were combined on this single-CD reissue by Collectables. Although the sound and the packaging could be a little better, this still is a fine way for collectors to pick up these two records on disc. ---Stephen Thomas Erlewine, allmusic
