During a prolific four-year tenure on Winter & Winter, Uri Caine has garnered international acclaim for his ceaselessly innovative appropriations of the music of Gustav Mahler, Richard Wagner, Robert Schumann, and J.S. Bach. By subjecting this material to a host of different textures, styles, and settings, Caine has earned a reputation as a bold conceptualist - a "man of ideas," as described by the New York Times.
Solitaire marks a new entry in the pianist's lexicon: a solo recital, consisting almost entirely of original compositions. Caine explains: "Almost all the playing that I've done on record has been with groups - which is something that I really like. It just got to the point where I wanted to get away from doing all these classical pieces, and deal with this other music. There was a backlog of songs I'd written that had never been recorded."
Those songs, which range in temperament and tone, maintain a common bond through Caine's instrumental voice. Yet within that voice coexist many subtle inflections. "There's a long history of solo piano playing," Caine notes, "so I'm trying to allude to those elements. Elements of stride, elements of the blues, of a freer type of jazz, and a lot of stuff coming out of Cecil Taylor." Rather than emphasizing contrasts between these styles, Caine brings them seamlessly together - often within the course of a single composition. The result is less like a collage than a musical stew, with each ingredient maintaining its distinctive taste even as it's absorbed into the whole.
Caine performs this alchemy with impressive ease. Solitaire was recorded over two days in late-autumn of 2000 at Schloss Elmau, a converted castle in the German Alps. "It was one of the easiest records to make," he recalls. "It was very relaxing in a way. We had so much music." Producer Stefan Winter similarly marvels: "Sometimes solo albums are difficult because you have to find the right moment. Uri came in with very clear ideas, and basically just went in and played. It was all there, coming out of himself." In this way, the album marks one of Caine's purest (and most intimate) artistic statements to date.
