A prolific composer with hundreds of film credits to his name, Lalo Schifrin is often associated with his scores for the hard-hitting 1970s and '80s DIRTY HARRY movies, starring Clint Eastwood as a tough, uncompromising San Francisco cop. This collection presents Schifrin's music for three of the films--DIRTY HARRY, SUDDEN IMPACT, and MAGNUM FORCE. Given the era and the movies' urban setting, many of the tracks have a slinky funk feel--"Dirty Harry's Creed" cruises along on a burbling bass line, while "Sudden Impact" features a prominent horn section and tinges of proto hip-hop and Latin sounds. (The latter element was, no doubt, influenced by Schifrin's Argentine heritage.) Like other revered composers such as Ennio Morricone and David Axelrod, Schifrin also makes bold use of wordless choral arrangements, which often achieve a haunting effect, as on the "Magnum Force Theme." This ANTHOLOGY will please fans of the DIRTY HARRY films as well as inventive movie scores in general. |
