Jazz
Duke Ellington & His Orchestra are heard performing live in Zurich, Switzerland, on an album of newly discovered recordings dating from May 2, 1950, with tenor saxophonist Don Byas sitting in and vocals by Kay Davis. This is a valuable taste of the Ellington band at the dawn of a decade that would prove to be both challenging and ultimately very rewarding for the Duke. Extended jams include eight minutes of "Frankie and Johnny" and a marvelous 12-and-a-half-minute visit with "The Tattooed Bride." Released in 2007 on Peter Schmidlin's TCB label (the letters stand for "Taking Care of Business"), this exciting new entry in the sprawling Duke Ellington discography is part of a catalog that fairly bristles with previously unreleased live jazz performances recorded in Baden, Bangkok, Basle, Berlin, Geneva, Lausanne, Lucerne, Santiago, and Zurich. Artists include (in addition to a full roster of hard boppers) Louis Armstrong, Buck Clayton, Benny Goodman, Lionel Hampton, Coleman Hawkins, Don Redman, and Ben Webster. ---arwulf arwulf, All Music Guide |
