Originally a singer with the Tony Pastor Band, as was her sister Betty, Rosemary Clooney left for a solo career in the early 1950s and was soon scoring major hits, topping the US charts with 'Half As Much' and 'This Ole House', the latter also topping the UK charts for good measure. Rosemary scored another UK number one hit with 'Mambo Italiano', despite the presence of a rival version by Dean Martin. Its progress in the US was hampered by the fact that every ABC radio station banned it on the grounds it 'did not reach standards of good taste!' She also scored a double sided hit alongside her then husband Jose Ferrer with 'Man'/'Woman', all of these tracks being featured on this particular compilation. Rosemary's chart career ended before the 1960s began and in recent times it has been another member of the Clooney clan, her nephew George, who has been receiving accolades in another area of the entertainment business, but not too long ago both of Rosemary's singles were effectively revived and became hits all over again - 'Mambo Italiano' and 'Mucho Mambo' in versions by Shaft. |
