Jazz
Jane Monheit (vocals); David "Fathead" Newman (flute, tenor saxophone); Donald Harrison, Hank Crawford (alto saxophone); Joel Frahm (tenor saxophone); Tom Harrell (trumpet); Kenny Barron (piano); Christian McBride, Ron Carter (bass instrument); Kenny Washington, Lewis Nash, Rick Montalbano, Gregg Hutchinson (drums)
Since the acclaimed jazz singer was still quite young at the time of this release and had only four albums to her name, it may seem a bit premature to release an album tiled THE VERY BEST OF JANE MONHEIT. Yet Monheit's vocal gifts are such that a best-of compilation seems far from precocious, especially since Monheit has more nuance, precision, and timbral control than most jazz singers twice her age. This sampler cherry-picks from her first efforts, and session help from old-school luminaries like Kenny Barron (piano), Ron Carter (bass), and David "Fathead" Newman (saxophone) give the set a sparkling, timeless quality. |
