Darren Barrett
On his second J Curve release, trumpeter Darren Barrett and his quintet offer masterful interplay and thoughtful approaches to this mix of seven originals and two standards. Barrett, a veteran of the Elvin Jones Jazz Explosion and groups led by Jackie McLean and Antonio Hart among others, continues his ascent to a rightful place in the pantheon of modern jazz trumpet giants, displaying a growing virtuosity as player and composer. Aided by the rhythm section of pianist Aaron Goldberg, bassist Reuben Rogers and drummer John Lamkin, and by saxophonist Jimmy Greene (all returning from First One Up), Dee "deels" the listener a collection of memorable tunes and performances.
