Dave Douglas Quintet Donny McCaslin (tenor saxophone) Dave Douglas (cornet) Uri Caine (Fender Rhodes piano) James Genus (double bass) Clarence Penn (drums) It's rare that Dave Douglas disappoints. His lesser recordings are always interesting, and his best are exceptional. LIVE AT THE JAZZ STANDARD, a two-disc set, falls into the latter category. Recorded at the New York City club at the end of 2006, these live performances showcase all new material (an unusual conceit for a live album), and feature Douglas on cornet (a refreshing change from his usual turns on trumpet) flanked by keyboardist Uri Cane, drummer Clarence Penn, bassist James Genus, and saxophonist Donny McCaslin. The music is seldom less than thrilling: intense, atmospheric, adventurous, and gorgeous. As usual, Douglas turns in a recording to rank among the finer examples of vital, contemporary jazz. |
