The Canadian Rob McConnell is a composer, arranger, valve-trombonist and a band leader of world reknown. His sense of humour paired with his supreme musicality, are prominent among the reasons for his great success.

Rob McConnell was born in Ontario in 1935. As a child he was introduced to music and playing an instrument by his family. An older brother was an excellent trumpeter and Rob longed to follow in his footsteps. When he was fifteen, however, he joined the high school big band as a slide-trombonist. And although a career as a musician was not his ambition at that time in his life, his talent and skills as a trombonist soon made the decisions for him, and today he is, without a doubt, one of the great trombone players of all time - three Grammys and 13 Grammy nominations provide ample evidence for this.

With this album the SWR Big Band, emulating the original Boss Brass format of 5 trumpets, 4 trombones plus Rob as soloist, 2 french horns, 5 saxophones, 4 rhythm plus percussion, pays homage to one of the greatest exponents of more recent big band history and his orchestra. Thus with Rob McConnell as guest director and soloist the motto and title of this CD is: "So very Rob" (Boss Brass Revisited).

Rob McConnell

Active Decades: '70s, '80s, '90s and '00s
Born: Feb 14, 1935 in London, Ontario, Canada
Genre: Jazz
Styles: Big Band, Bop, Mainstream Jazz, Modern Big Band, Swing

Although it has always been a part-time venture (working maybe 30 days a year counting an annual recording), Rob McConnell's Boss Brass has been one of the finest big bands since the mid-'70s. An excellent soloist, McConnell has played valve trombone in Toronto (both in the studios and in jazz settings) for a long time. During 1965-1969, he was in Nimmons 'n' Nine Plus Six (led by Phil Nimmons) and in 1968 formed Boss Brass. Originally, the group was comprised entirely of brass instruments, plus a rhythm section, and emphasized pop music. Although it added a saxophone section in 1971, Boss Brass did not record much jazz until 1976. Comprised of many of Toronto's top musicians (including Sam Noto, Guido Basso, Ian McDougall, Moe Koffman, Eugene Amaro, Rick Wilkins, Ed Bickert, Don Thompson, and Terry Clarke, among others), the orchestra mostly plays McConnell's swinging but surprising charts. For a period in the late '80s, McConnell moved to Los Angeles and the group broke up, but by 1991, it was back together again. Rob McConnell, who has also cut a few small-group dates for Concord, has recorded with his Boss Brass for Pausa, MPS, Dark Orchid, Innovation, and Concord.
