Jazz
Recorded in Barcelona, 1965
Tete Montoliu (p) Eric Peter (b) Billy Brooks (d)
An outstanding veteran pianist from Barcelona (Spain), Tete Montoliu was born blind. By the mid-50s he was regularly sitting in with visiting American artists, including Lionel Hampton. By the end of the decade he had ventured north to play at a number of important European jazz festivals and had also played in Scandinavia. Montoliu's own recording career began in 1958, and he was to prove a prolific recording artist. "Like the first volume, A Tot Jazz, Vol. 2 features pianist Tete Montoliu leading a trio with bassist Eric Peter, and drummer Billie Brooks taking Peer Wyboris' place. The dark introduction to "Chim Chim Cheree" suggests Jaki Byard, though the body of this piece from Mary Poppins is played in a modal setting à la John Coltrane. Montoliu's loping treatment of "Secret Love," with a steady vamp in the left hand during most of the piece, gives this standard a new look. Montoliu features Brooks in a rapid-fire take of "Salt Peanuts," while Peter's cool bass solo is the centerpiece of the driving interpretation of John Carisi's "Israel." The pianist approaches the lovely waltz "Sometime Ago" at a much slower tempo then most artists, preferring to let the melody speak for itself in a spacious arrangement that still shows off his tremendous chops. This is another excellent date by the blind Catalonian pianist." --- Ken Dryden (All Music Guide) |
