Jazz
This eccentrically assembled jazz compilation features some fascinating recordings made by both familiar and lesser-known artists, from the trombonist Jack Teagarden's vintage performance of "Meet Me Where They Play the Blues," to a decidedly odd version of "Deep Purple" by the obscure Charlie Lynne, accompanied by a stratospherically voiced singer. There's an interesting example of the great R&B saxophonist King Curtis playing jazz on a lyrical "The Nearness of You," as well as Woody Herman's Big Band performing the reliable "Woodchopper's Ball," classic Coleman Hawkins saxophone on an unusual arrangement of "What a Difference a Day Makes," and the singer June Davis and the keyboard player Freddy Washington joining forces on a slick, sophisticated "8-9-10."
While the title Jazz Gold is quite a stretch, this double-disc set highlights several different varieties of the genre that encompass big-band leader Woody Herman, legendary bop saxophonist Charlie Parker, soul-jazz organist Jimmy Smith and Latin jazz showman and percussionist Tito Puente. While the sound quality varies throughout, this is a decent primer for the novice at a bargain bin price. ---Al Campbell, All Music Guide |
