For Live at Smoke, his first DVD as a leader, Rodney Jones selected material from every stage of his career, including tunes he had not previously recorded. The result is an exquisite juxtaposition of traditional and progressive works, including sultry ballads, floor-pounding grooves, and everything in between.
A gifted solo artist and an A-list sideman for Dizzy Gillespie, James Brown, Lena Horne and other top performers, Rodney conceived this recording to be a thoroughly entertaining concert DVD as well as a valuable demonstration of techniques and stylistic linkages.
Cool-toned jazz guitarist Rodney Jones presents a collection of live clips spanning his entire career in this release featuring all the fan favorites and a few super-rare surprises. From the traditional to the progressive and virtually everything in between, former Dizzy Gillespie sideman Jones is joined by a number of talented musicians including Brian Charette, Lonnie Plaxico, and Ray Marchica for seventeen songs including "Groove Bone", "Soul Manifesto", "Stella by Starlight", and "Undiscovered Few". ---Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide
Rodney Jones
Active Decades: '70s, '80s, '90s and '00s Born: Aug 30, 1956 in New Haven, CT Genre: Jazz Styles: Fusion, Post-Bop
An underrated cool-toned guitarist who sounds at his best in straight-ahead settings, Rodney Jones had his highest visibility during his period with Dizzy Gillespie (1976-1979), when he was in his early twenties. Jones had previously worked with Jaki Byard and recorded with Chico Hamilton, and he would follow the association with Gillespie by working for a time as Lena Horne's accompanist. As a leader, Jones has recorded for Timeless (in 1978 and 1981), the RR label, and in the late '80s for Minor Music. ---Scott Yanow, All Music Guide |
