The Last Decca Years, 1949-1954, contains both kinds of song. There are masterpieces of the songwriting art like Harold Arlen and Ted Koehler's I've Got the World on a String and an exhilarating showcase for Ella Fitzgerald's improvisational wizardry like Preview. There are also a few decidedly lesser items. But in terms of how the material is treated, things are remarkably consistent, because these tracks all come from sessions at which the singer was teamed with one of the greatest arrangers jazz has ever known.

This is a strong, moving collection of songs and performances. The combination of Ella's pure presence and Sy Oliver's rich arrangements makes for an elegant listen. An eight-piece backs the diva's duet with Mr. Armstrong on "Dream A Little Dream Of Me", the band laying back just enough to spotlight the sweet exchange at hand. "Basin Street Blues" is a fun crawl, with Ella's comical Armstrong imitation.
TrumpeterBernie Privin offers his pickled swagger on "Solid As A Rock", a lollipop love anthem with a swinging gospel feel. Other highlights of Ella's hip way with ear candy include "GoodyGoody" and "You'll Have To Swing It (Mr. Paganini)", the latter brought convincingly to life with her scat forays. Fromthe evidence at hand, it is clear that Ella's last years with Verve have many jewels to offer.
