Johnny Mercer is the only lyricist Ella Fitzgerald saluted in her celebrated Songbook series. But the choice should be no surprise. The Sentimental Gentleman from Georgia wrote scores of standards, collaborating with dozens of composers, in his forty-plus-year career. And with a recent Broadway show devoted to Mercer’s chestnuts, the time is right to honor him with this reissue. This was the last of Fitzgerald’s songbooks for Verve. She benefits from the brilliant arranging skills of Nelson Riddle; it was their third collaboration. And she summons once again her peerless gift for interpreting popular song. This is a lovely, and telling, summation of the landmark series. |
