Laurence Hammond's 1934 invention turned an unwieldy object associated with churches and skating rinks into something portable. Following World War II, the Hammond organ started appearing in cocktail lounges as a novelty -- until Jimmy Smith featured the instrument in a modern-jazz combo. For Smith's dazzling Verve debut, he augments his group with the equally modern orchestra of Oliver Nelson. The maverick Smith, already the influence on organ, became a star of another magnitude with this groudbreaking record. |
