A concert performance by Thelonious Monk, presenting orchestral versions (seven horns, three rhythm) of a half-dozen of his challenging compositions, would be a formidable recording task under any circumstances. In 1959, when tape equipment was far less effective than it is today, and Monk's works had never before been presented in other than a small-group "blowing" context, it was a gigantic undertaking. Thanks to Hall Overton's masterful and ingenious orchestrations, and some inspired playing by Thelonious and such major supporting artists as Donald Byrd, Phil Woods, and Charlie Rouse, it became an enduring masterpiece of recorded jazz. |
