Jazz
Percussion giant Mongo Santamaria always had an ear for talent, and really struck it rich when he found the sensual, irrepressible dynamo from Oriente Province in Cuba known as La Lupe. In this debut recording, La Lupe alternates tracks with Santamaria's band and comes on like a hurricane each time out, displaying the energy and attitude that made her a mainstay of New York’s Latin scene. The instrumental titles are equally valuable, and feature Santamaria regulars like trumpeter Marty Sheller, saxophonist Pat Patrick (on an extended hiatus from the Sun Ra Arkestra) and pianist Rodgers Grant. These talented players and writers insured that Santamaria's group always kept one foot in the jazz camp, and created music of uncommon staying power. |
