Whether it is a live concert performance, a live television show, or just life in general, one of the major differences between a live event and a contrived one is that something can go wrong. Maybe that's why jazz fans have always treasured live music over studio recordings; after all, jazz is, in a sense, a music distinguished by its "mistakes" -- note substitutions, variations in tempo, unusual phrasing. Ideally, it is heard live and in person; secondarily, on an unembellished recording of the performance as it happened.
What we have here is just a secondary experience; a recording of three sets performed at the Newport Jazz Festival on successive nights -- July 4, 5, and 6, 1957 -- by Ella Fitzgerald, Carmen McRae, and Billie Holiday.
