Chet Baker's star rose quickly when he was a founding member of the ground breaking but short-lived Gerry Mulligan Quartet. In 1953, he formed his own quartet with the outstanding fiery pianist Russ Freeman, who also served as musical director and provided many of the quartet's ingenious tunes. They toured the country constantly on the strength of the studio albums that were made for the fledgling Pacific Jazz label. A recently discovered tape that makes up the first five tracks of this CD is believed to be the group's first concert appearance and is issued here for the first time. Completing the CD is their Jazz At Ann Arbor album recorded the following year. Two more volumes of this little gem of a band will be issued in the forthcoming months. The original tapes have been remastered using 24-bit Super Bit Mapping.
