Jazz / Bop
Recorded: Mar 1977-Jun 1997
On this 1998 sampler CD, guitarist Kenny Burrell is heard during two periods, 1977-79 and 1995-97. His sound was largely developed in the 1950s and remained unchanged during his Concord years. The majority of the ten selections feature him as the lead voice in a pianoless trio or quartet. The only exceptions are an unaccompanied version of "Lotus Blossom," and a sextet jam on "Birk's Works," and two selections in which his quartet (with pianist James Williams) is joined by the Boys Choir of Harlem. This is a mixed bag and not too essential overall, although listeners will want to explore some of the individual sessions. ---Scott Yanow, allmusic
