It isn't often that jazz music manages to be both radically experimental and accessible. The Lounge Lizards pull off this difficult synthesis with far-out, elegant, skewed, and groovy aplomb. Frontman and composer John Lurie leads the line-up of two saxophones, trumpet, bass clarinet, cello, bass, drums, piano, and auxiliary percussion through shimmering explorations of texture and musical possibility. Atmosphere is paramount in the Lizards' music, and the dark jungle of "The Birds Near Her House," the soaring dance pulse of the title track, the warped midway of "John Zorn's S&M Circus," and the fragmented bad-dream-sequence of "Scary Children" evoke surging, shifting mind-movies. A superior example of an all-too-rare creative and singular musical vision, QUEEN OF ALL EARS is beautiful, challenging music of the highest order.
JazzTimes (6/99, pp.109-110) - "...intelligent and rhythmically and harmonically interesting...[The Lizard's] innocent directness...transcend stylistic prejudice....the music here works so well as to represent a healthy challenge to our norms." Option (July-August 1998) - "...All of these pieces are full of bewildering twists and turns that show off the musicians' dazzling chops....This is amazing music by a unit that has become one of the best in the world."

John Lurie's so-called "non-jazz" approach is in full flower on this fascinating record. The ever-growing (nine-piece at this point) band builds layers of rhythm and melody with unique effect throughout. On "The Birds Near Her House," a serpentine melodic line weaves through a steady rhythmic bed, building to a frenetic climax. "Scary Children" is a foreboding dirge that still manages to exude true humor. Perhaps that is the most significant aspect of this music: it has real character and life. It doesn't just groove -- it starts a conversation. ---Tim Sheridan, All Music Guide |
