Altoist Jackie McLean's first recording in five years found him exploring two Charlie Parker tunes, Charlie Chaplin's "Smile" and his own "Das Dat." All but the 9-minute "Confirmation" are over 15 minutes long yet McLean's lengthy solos hold one's interest, as does the playing of pianist Kenny Drew, bassist Bo Stief and drummer Alex Riel. Although not as advanced as some of his Blue Note classics of the 1960s, McLean is in top form and quite explorative during these performances; his sound is certainly instantly recognizable.
