Stan Getz, known to an audience numbering millions, was one of the last living jazz legends. The recordings of this concert have gone down in jazz history as 'the final concert recordings', even though they are actually the penultimate live recordings.
Terminally ill at the time of this recording, although Getz appears serious and tired, especially towards the end of the concert, he certainly does not look frail. Whatever his state of health, the ear cannot fail to hear that Getz is in full possession of his creative powers throughout the concert.
Stan Getz initially drew attention to himself in well-known big bands towards the end of the swing era; he played with Stan Kenton, Jimmy Dorsey and Benny Goodman. He is accompanied here by amongst others pianist Kenny Barron, arguably his most important musical partner during the last years of his life.
"Jazz is not about flashy licks. It's a story with a beginning, middle and end", Stan Getz explained towards the end of his life, and this concert is proof of his statement, with its heartbreakingly beautiful ballads and perfectly crafted pieces.
