By 2003, Devo was no longer a full-time proposition, as its members had retired to work "behind the scenes," at their own Hollywood studio (Mutato Muzika). But sporadic live shows appeared here and there, such as their first Japanese dates in quite some time, documented on the DVD Live in the Land of the Rising Sun. More than 20 years have passed since the group were early MTV poster boys, and as a result, the chaps in the energy domes and yellow jumpsuits have expectedly "matured" a bit in the looks department (a few extra pounds, a few less hair follicles, etc.), but they still do a fine job of playing the classics and putting on a worthy live show, as evidenced here. While not quite as unpredictable or zany as their early shows were, the Japanese performance contains quite a few standouts, including the rarely played "Freedom of Choice" (which for years was only performed in instrumental form), as well as "Smart Patrol/Mr. DNA," "Uncontrollable Urge," and "Jocko Homo," among others. Also included are a few bonus goodies, including a rare live clip from 1980, "Gut Feeling," as well as present-day interviews and footage. ---Greg Prato, AMG |
