It seems that Steve Lacy and Evan Parker brought the art of soprano saxophone playing to the ultimate heights. What else can be achieved in terms of concept, sound or virtuosity? Apparently, they have not said the last word. Here is a daring young man with a vision who is trying to push the boundaries of multiphonics even further. Of course, as his predecessors, he uses circular breathing, but on top of that his breathing and voice become musical devices.
A full program of very explorative soprano-saxophone solos is certainly not for everyone. Ariel Shibolet builds his improvisations slowly, often starting with an intense pattern fueled by his circular breathing and then making gradual changes. He often uses multiphonics and creates quite a world of unusual sounds and ideas. While his performances are mostly pretty concise, the opening "Slow Change Slow Development," which runs over nine-and-a-half-minutes, is his best showcase and really displays his approach. This music will be considered hypnotic by some, tedious by others, but one certainly cannot fault Ariel Shibolet for playing it safe or not having very impressive musical chops. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide |
