One of the greatest Jazz trumpet figures of all time, Dizzy's enormous charisma, both musically and personally are evident when seeing the two outstanding documents presented on this DVD. Both shows were recorded in London. The first one presents Diz fronting his own quintet in 1965, with such important musicians as James Moody and Kenny Barron. The second, filmed in 1966 according to most recent research has him as part of an all star program that also includes Clark Terry, Zoot Sims, Teddy Wilson, Bob Cranshaw and Louis Bellson, plus, again, James Moody. The program on both shows is full of Dizzy's classic compositions, including two versions of the celebrated "Tin Tin Deo", co-composed by Diz with Cuban percussionist Chano Pozo. In all, an splendid DVD full of rarely seen performances. |
