Although Woody Herman's spectrum of musical talents ranged from him being a good alto and soprano saxophonist, an excellent swing clarinetist to inspired blues singer, his main contribution to the story of jazz was as bandleader of a large number of pioneering big bands. He always made sure that his bands boasted the strongest of the new talent developing on the jazz scene and his ability to integrate new musical developments, such as bop and even rock, kept his sound contemporary and relevant.
