 James Louis "J. J." Johnson was an outstanding trombone player and a gifted composer. He was a truly accomplished musician and one of the innovators on his instrument. This puts him in a line with other great innovators of jazz, explorers of sound who always went beyond limits. His work and legacy transpires the label of being the pioneer of bop trombone. Throughout his career, Johnson made hundreds of recordings which reflect his immense talent. Johnson played with a very rich, smooth tone and excellent technique. This enabled him to follow through his musical concepts and improvise with great clarity
