In popularity the Saints Jazz Band were Manchester's first 'jazz sons' throughout the 1950s and early Sixties. The overall individuality of style over the years from other contemporary bands, engendered friends and aficionados alike to their following on the Manchester Trad-jazz social scene and nationwide. In their time the Saints, this deified group of talented musicians, played alongside such jazz heavyweights as Louis Armstrong, Sidney Bechet and Eddie Condon. Their records were made by George Martin. Despite the changes and tragedies, it's to the credit of the later musicians who joined the band, the Saints Jazz Band still maintained an individual sound, with excellent interpretative internal balance, and continued the high standards set by the early band. |
