• The summer of that year, her co-penned ‘Got To Be Real,’ acknowledged now as a timeless classic that has been used in countless movies, television ad campaigns, sampled and covered, could be heard literally across the globe from London to New York, Paris to Tokyo, giving the soulful singer an anthem that has continued to bring dancers to their feet everywhere. The single reached No. 1 on the U.S. R&B charts and No. 23 on the Hot 100.
• Cheryl’s self-titled debut album also included another dance anthem, ‘Star Love’ as well as a cover of ‘Come In From The Rain’ (a 1977 hit for Captain & Tennille) and four more songs that Cheryl wrote or co-wrote. The album was certified gold, reaching No. 5 on the U.S. R&B and No. 23 on Top 200 Albums’ charts.
• Originally reissued in the US in 2010, the CD has been generally unavailable for the last few years; this new remastered version on SoulMusic Records includes two tracks not originally included – the much-loved 12” single mix and 7” single edits of ‘Star Love’ along with the single version of ‘Got To Be Real’ and 12” single of ‘You Saved My Day.’ Edited from the original essay by renowned U.S. writer A. Scott Galloway, the notes include quotes from Cheryl, co-producer David Paich (of Toto fame) and famed drummer James Gadson. |
